December 16, 2002

SPARTANBURG, SC—Wofford College has received a $200,000 gift from The Abney Foundation in Anderson, S.C., to be added to the John Pope Abney Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship fund’s value is now more than $5 million, making it the largest endowed scholarship fund at Wofford today.

“We are deeply indebted to The Abney Foundation founders and directors for their commitment to building such a significant scholarship program at Wofford College,” says President Benjamin B. Dunlap. “Since The Abney Foundation made its first gift of $500,000 in 1983 to this scholarship fund at Wofford, it has been an essential and growing part of the college’s ability to attract and retain outstanding students.”

Awards from the John Pope Abney Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund are reserved for students who meet some of their educational expenses through participation in the college’s work or athletics programs. Some 50 students are receiving money from the fund this year.

John Pope Abney was a member of the Wofford College Class of 1904.
