Wofford College Chaplain to Speak at Opening Convocation

SPARTANBURG, SC – Ron Robinson (Class of 1978), Perkins-Prothro Chaplain and Professor of Religion, will be the speaker for the Wofford College’s opening convocation on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003. The program will be held at 11 a.m. in Leonard Auditorium in Main Building.

The opening convocation welcomes Wofford’s Class of 2007 as well as returning students, who begin classes on Monday, Sept. 1.

Many freshmen already have reported to campus and are participating in “The Summit,” a two-day adventure learning experience that combines freshmen, upperclassmen, faculty and staff for outdoor activities, group initiatives and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. They will be at Camp Greystone in Tuxedo, NC, until Friday.

Here are some other key events surrounding the opening of the 2003-04 academic year at Wofford:

Friday, Aug. 29 – New resident students arrive on campus beginning at 9 a.m., move into residence halls. Opening orientation session, 3 p.m., Leonard Auditorium, Main Building; other orientation meetings continue throughout the day in various locations. Other on-campus social activities for students only will be held in the evening.

Saturday, Aug. 30 – “Introduction to the Curriculum,” orientation session, 9 a.m., Leonard Auditorium. Other meetings take place throughout the day in various locations.

Sunday, Aug. 31 – Class of 2007 photograph, 10:45 a.m., front steps of Main Building; worship service, 11 a.m.; other orientation meetings continue throughout the day in various locations.

Monday, Sept. 1 – Regular classes begin, 8:30 a.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 2 – “The Novel Experience” freshman reading program. All new students and their advisors will meet for dinner and a discussion of “A Year of Wonders,” by Geraldine Brooks. Restaurant assignments made at 6 p.m. in Leonard Auditorium. (Geraldine Brooks will be on campus on Tuesday, Sept. 16, for “The Novel Experience” Convocation at 11 a.m. as well as a reading at 7 p.m., both in Leonard Auditorium.)

Thursday, Sept. 4 – Opening Convocation. Ron Robinson, Perkins-Prothro Chaplain and Professor of Religion, speaker. 11 a.m., Leonard Auditorium. (Public is invited to attend this free event.) Interest, Religious Life and Community Service Fair and Picnic Dinner. 5 p.m., front lawn of Main Building. Meet the Players Pep Rally and SAC Back-to-School Party. 9 p.m., Main Building Mall Area. Troubadour Concert Series. Duo D'Amore, classical guitar & oboe. 7 p.m., Papadopoulos Building. (Public invited to this free event.)

Saturday, Sept. 6 – Class of 2007 Orientation Service Day. 10 a.m., students meet in front of Main Building. Terriers vs. SC State Bulldogs. 7 p.m., Gibbs Stadium.

Sunday, Sept. 7 – Worship Service. 11 a.m., Leonard Auditorium.

Monday, Sept. 8 – Transitions Social for all new students of color. 6:30 p.m., Association for African-American Students (AAAS) Lounge, Burwell Building.

Tuesday, Sept. 16 – Class of 2007 Convocation: “The Novel Experience.” Speaker, Geraldine Brooks, author of “A Year of Wonders.” 11 a.m., Leonard Auditorium. Meet the Author, Geraldine Brooks. 7:30 p.m., McMillan Theater, Campus Life Building. (Public is invited to attend both of these programs; free.)
