Wofford names Annie Mitchell vice president of marketing, communications

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a nationwide search, Wofford College announced today (Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013) that Annie Mitchell, current director of university marketing and special initiatives at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., has been named Wofford’s vice president for marketing and communications.

“I am excited that Annie will join the Wofford College ranks, and know she will bring energy, ideas, creativity and leadership to this area of the college,” President Nayef H. Samhat says. “Annie has a proven background in marketing and communications, and I am confident she will play a crucial role in working with all areas of the college and the community to build upon our exceptional brand.”

In this new capacity, Mitchell primarily will be responsible for brand stewardship; marketing strategy and planning; student recruitment in conjunction with the admission team; marketing leadership; functional operations improvement; and functional leadership and development. She will join the Wofford College family on Jan. 6, 2014.

Mitchell comes to Wofford College with 20 years of experience in the public relations, media relations, communications and marketing arenas, with a unique, demonstrated skill set in higher education creative positioning and strategic communication planning and implementation. As director of university marketing and special initiatives at Belmont University, Mitchell is responsible for protecting, promoting, enhancing and showcasing the university’s brand, as well as for the approval and ongoing coordination and assessment of all marketing resources and campaigns. She also is responsible for the planning and execution of institution-wide special initiatives and supervises the creative, web and marketing teams.

Prior to joining Belmont, Mitchell was director of marketing for Iowa City’s ACT Inc., as well as director of media relations, communications and marketing for the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning.

Mitchell received a bachelor of arts from the University of Iowa and a certificate in executive leadership from Belmont University. She earned her accreditation in public relations (APR) designation by the Public Relations Society of America.
