Portraits William M. Wightman

William M. Wightman
Wofford College was founded in 1854 when Spartanburg was a small village.    During its early years the College played a crucial role in providing a cultural focus for this small village.  As it built a reputation for education, the institution also built a reputation for great educators.  To honor these men -- the faculty was all male in those days -- the College and its friends began commissioning portraits.  This practice began almost simultaneously with the founding of the College and continues today. The portrait collection of Wofford College represents some of the best work produced in Spartanburg during the latter part of the nineteenth and the early twentieth century.

Restoration Efforts
In 1991 a group of campus faculty, administrators and interested friends of the College formed an organization to promote the restoration of the paintings.  By the fall of 2002 sixteen works had been restored.  The paintings are well worth this restoration effort, as they feature the work of prominent Southern portrait artists, and because their subjects played important roles in the history of Wofford College, Spartanburg and South Carolina.
