Biographical/Historical note
Mrs. George K. Scott was a resident of Roanoke, VA when she received correspondence from Kenney and Shelby Scott, her sons.
Kenney Scott was stationed in England from December 1942 until at least May 1945. He served in the 1047th Ordnance Company Avn. This unit appears to have been renamed the 1675th Ordnance Supply and Maintenance Company Avn at some point in his service.
Shelby Scott was stationed at various parts of the southern United States before being stationed in England sometime after May 1944. From December 1942 through March 1943, he was a member of the Thirteenth Training Batallion, Company B at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. From late March 1943 until May 1943, Shelby was a member of Group 1 Squadron K at the Nashville Army Air Center (A.A.F.C.C.). In May 1943, he was assigned to Squadron 3 Group 2 of the U.S. Army Air Corps at Maxwell Field, Alabama where he was stationed until July 1943. From July 1943 through August 1943, Shelby was a member of Flight H of the 10th Army Air Forces Training Detachment in Lafayette, Louisiana. From September 1943 through October 1943, he was a member of Class 44A at Gunter Field, Alabama. From November 1943 until mid-January 1944, Shelby was a member of Class 44A at Turner Field in Albany, Georgia. In mid-January, he graduated from the United States Army Air Forces Advanced Flying School and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. From late January until late March 1944, he was stationed at Hendricks Field, Florida. From late March 1944 until sometime after May 1944, Shelby was a member of Gunnery Group-I at Buckingham Field in Fort Myers, Florida.

This collection consists of 464 letters written to Mrs. George K. Scott of Roanoke, Virginia dating from December 1, 1942 through August 1, 1945. The majority of the letters are from her two sons, Kenney and Shelby.

Arrangement note
The materials have been arranged into six series. The majority of the collection is comprised of Series 1 and Series 2. Series 3, Series 4, Series 5, and Series 6 include only seven letters.Series 1 includes correspondence from Kenney Scott to Mrs. George K. Scott.Series 2 includes correspondence from Shelby Scott to Mrs. George K. Scott. Series 3 includes correspondence from Kenney Scott to Shelby Scott.Series 4 includes correspondence from Kenney Scott to Eugene Scott. Series 5 includes correspondence from Mrs. G.H. Lewis to Mrs. G.H. Scott. Series 6 includes correspondence from Robert D. Echols to Mrs. S.D. Scott.
