Wofford College. Humanities Project
Records, 1970-80 [bulk 1973-79]
1 cubic foot, in 32 folders

In 1973, Wofford College received a $386,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop a more flexible humanities program.  The grant, covering a period of five years from June 1, 1973 to May 31, 1978 and later extended to August 31, 1978, resulted in the institution of a required freshman seminar (Humanities 101), a sophomore interdisciplinary humanities course (Humanities 201-202), and revisions to the core curriculum requirements in the humanities.  The grant also focused on the development of communications skills by aiding in the development of a new writing lab and reading center.  The grant also allowed the development of majors in the humanities and in intercultural studies, encouraged the planning of cluster courses, and allowed faculty members to expand their teaching offerings.

Organized into 32 folders

Access: Unrestricted

Summary: The papers consist of reports to the NEH prepared by the college, internal evaluations by individual faculty members, and periodic evaluations by the NEH.  Several folders consist of correspondence between the project director, Professor Thomas V. Thoroughman, and officials at the NEH.  Other files contain correspondence between faculty members of the college who were involved in the project, and between Dr. Thoroughman and faculty members at other colleges and universities who were involved with the project.  The files detail the creation of the two new majors, contain syllabi and course descriptions for new courses brought about by the grant, and also show the work that faculty members undertook to enhance their credentials as a result of the grant
