Historical note:  The Business Office is the administrative division of Wofford College responsible for the collection and disbursement of the College's funds.  The Business Office also supervises human resources policies such as retirement plans, insurance, and other personnel benefits.

The office itself has grown substantially over the College's history.  Through 1920, a faculty member served as the treasurer of the College in addition to his teaching duties.  Among the faculty members who served as treasurer were David Duncan and Daniel A. DuPre.  In 1920, Joseph K. Davis, a member of the class of 1910, became the college's first full-time treasurer.  The title itself changed on occasion, to bursar, and later to controller.  Harold S. Smithyman became the bursar in 1952, and served in that job until his retirement in 1982.  Charlotte P. Tinsley succeeded him in that position.

As the college grew in the years after World War II, the financial administration had to grow as well.  In 196-, Edward E. Greene became director of finance and planning, and later vice president for business.  He had supervisory responsibility for the business office, the physical plant, and several auxiliary services.  The controller remained responsible for receiving and disbursing funds.  In 1997, following an administrative reorganization and Mr. Greene's retirement, Mrs. Tinsley became the treasurer of the college.  As the chief financial officer, she oversees endowment asset management, develops the annual budget, oversees the business office and employee benefits, and is responsible for insurance.

Organization:  The Records of the Business office are organized into 7 series:  Memoranda and Announcements; Budgets; Audits; Reports and Financial Statements; Treasurer's Ledgers; Personnel Policies and Announcements; and TIAA-CREF statements.

Summary:  The records of the business office include the ledgers maintained by the treasurers; budgets prepared for and approved by the Board of Trustees; audits conducted by independent accountants; and memoranda, policy statements and announcements.  The ledgers are voluminous.  The records also include regular financial reports prepared for administrators, reports regarding annual giving, and reports for external users.  The personnel policy records consist of notices regarding employee benefits and other announcements, notices to employees required by law, and statements from the college's retirement fund administrator.
