Archives: Obituary Index

The Archives maintains an index of obituaries that have appeared in the conference newspaper, the Southern Christian Advocate, since its inception in 1837, and in its successor newspaper, the South Carolina United Methodist Advocate.  The Advocate covered South Carolina and Georgia until about 1887, and the southern part of North Carolina until about 1870.

Please contact for information about obtaining an obituary. In your message, please include the name, date, page, and column information from the index for each obituary you are requesting.

Thanks to our listing in the index, we're experiencing significant delays in responding to requests.  At the moment, we are scanning from the microfilm and sending copies digitally.  The Advocate is not available digitally - we have to search for and scan each obituary individually.  As of April 29, 2016, we have about 150 pending requests.  As a result, we may not be able to answer your request until June.  Also, if you request more than two obituary copies, you may be assessed a fee of $5 per obituary copy.

Click in any of the search boxes and type your search. Try searching by last name first. If you get more results than you want, enter more terms to narrow your search.
