Archives: Obituary Index

The Archives maintains an index of obituaries that have appeared in the conference newspaper, the Southern Christian Advocate, since its inception in 1837, and in its successor newspaper, the South Carolina United Methodist Advocate.  The Advocate covered South Carolina and Georgia until about 1887, and the southern part of North Carolina until about 1870.

Thanks to our listing in the Ancestry.com index, we're experiencing significant delays in responding to requests, and have about 150 requests in our backlog.  As Commencement approaches, we're going to have less student help, and with that and upcoming vacations, we are suspending accepting new obituary requests until we can clear the backlog somewhat.  Please check back around June 13 to see if we have resumed accepting new requests.

The Advocate is not available digitally - we have to search for and scan each obituary individually.  If you request more than two obituary copies, you may be assessed a fee of $5 per obituary copy.

Click in any of the search boxes and type your search. Try searching by last name first. If you get more results than you want, enter more terms to narrow your search.
