Like Wofford College students, students who attend the Language Academy @ Wofford are engaged, forward-thinking, multi-talented, active, inquisitive, interested and interesting – all the attributes that make language immersion a life-changing experience!
At LA@W you will take part in classes, recreation, creative projects, cultural exploration and have a rich social life – all in a caring and supportive immersion language environment. You also set your own learning goals and see how much you are learning as you track your own progress!
Classes – LA@W class sizes are very small, just 10 students. This provides you with lots of opportunities to speak and listen, and students are encouraged to speak up! Don’t wait until you are perfect – mistakes are the path to learning, and you will be exposed to over 100 hours of language learning.
Creative Projects – Understanding and appreciating the culture of your language is as important as good vocabulary and grammar! You will be learning about culture as part of a team that studies film, then creates a script and films a short feature film. You will learn about the foods of the countries, then make meals together. You will study the prominent artists, then create your own masterpieces! We encourage you to incorporate your other talents, whether they are musical, theatrical, athletic or creative.
Cultural Exploration – Your immersion experience will include speakers and performers, films, popular music and dance, and exposure to the sports of the culture.
Recreation – Do you play basketball, soccer or volleyball? How about Frisbee golf or boules? Do you prefer to exercise outdoors or in air-conditioned comfort? Wofford College has it all! Our daily schedule provides plenty of time to take advantage of these facilities as part of team activities or individually.
Social Life – You will eat meals together in language, gaining the ability to express yourself in very realistic and useful language. In addition to classes and recreational activities, students will share time together at dances, field trips, and relaxing down-time in the dorms.
