"We continue to face an enormous and important challenge in preparing our nation's future leaders for a globally connected, competitive and interdependent world. Our faculty and staff have committed us to meeting that challenge." - Dean David S. Wood
The Language Academy @ Wofford is a residential summer language immersion program that is held on Wofford's beautiful campus in Spartanburg, South Carolina and is open to rising 9th grade through 12th grade students.
The Language Academy @ Wofford is an extension of Wofford's commitment to creating global citizens with cross-cultural competence who are prepared to succeed in the future. Since 2007, more than 1,700 Wofford students have studied abroad in 70 countries on all seven continents and 15% of the Class of 2011 majored or minored in a foreign language. Students participating in the Language Academy @ Wofford will find themselves in an environment that is supportive of their endeavors and committed to helping them succeed.
The Language Academy @ Wofford offers two week language immersion programs in French, German, and Spanish. Each program has a student to faculty ratio of 10:1 so that each student receives personal attention. Studying a foreign language in a safe and controlled immersion environment builds a student's confidence in his or her language abilities by boosting listening and speaking skills, improving vocabulary, and developing a deeper understanding of grammar. Students will also be exposed to the culture of areas of the world where the language they are studying is spoken as well as cross-cultural awareness. What comprises culture? How are cultures similar and different, and why? We treat cultural competence as a critical component of communication.. See more beneficial reasons to study a foreign language.
Students agree to abide by a modified version of Wofford’s honor code. They promise to be honest, trustworthy, and respectful of all participants, their wellbeing and their learning goals.
