Major Reading Program

Each major participates in the Major Reading program, a two-semester, one credit course (HI 447-448), usually in the second semester junior year and first semester senior year. Students read a total of four books (two per semester), each chosen by a different member of the department faculty. (The book usually is something that does not fit into the usual class fare.) Then the students meet as a group at the faculty member’s home for an informal discussion over refreshments.

Below are some titles recently used in the program:

Benedict Anderson, Imagined Communities
Paul Berman, Terror and Liberalism
Michael Lesy, Wisconsin Death Trip
Simon Schama, Dead Certainties
Eric Schlosser, Fast Food Nation
