Waste Management

So much of what we throw out doesn't have to end up in a landfill. More than half of all garbage produced can be recycled.

Not only does recycling save landfill space, it also helps preserve our planet's natural resources. Plastics are made from petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource--when they are recycled, they can be used for everything from outdoor lumber to life jackets.

Each pound of aluminum we recycle eliminates the need to mine four pounds of bauxite ore and saves enough electricity to run a television set for three hours. With all the benefits that come from recycling, Wofford believes in doing its part.

Palmetto Pride

Wofford is making a point to work with organizations and other schools to bring the importance of recycling into focus. That's why, since November 2008, Wofford has partnered with Palmetto Pride to incorporate recycling during home football games.

“We are excited to join other schools in South Carolina in this recycling initiative through Palmetto Pride. Our campus is already very active in the recycling effort and expanding this to our football tailgating areas makes recycling for those visiting our campus very convenient,” said Lenny Mathis, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Promotions, Wofford College.
PalmettoPride provides recycling bins, signage and t-shirts. The bins are located around the stadium and are marked to receive plastic, glass, and aluminum. Wofford coordinates the logistics of recycling, including collection and removal of recyclable materials.
The effort is part of a grant provided by PalmettoPride that is designed as a two-year program, where the school brings together environmental service, athletics and volunteers to increase awareness of the program, reduce litter and change behavior that creates litter.

RecycleMania

Terriers Unite! Become a RecycleManiac and beat those other schools!

Wofford has joined RecycleMania, a friendly competition for college and university rivals to challenge each other to recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities.

Over a 10-week period Wofford, along with other schools, will report recycling and trash data. All the schools are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.

With each week’s reports and rankings, we can watch how our results rate against other schools and rally to reduce and recycle more. This is the kind of competition where no matter who comes in first, we all win!
