Student Efforts

Wofford students are at the very heart of Wofford's environmental efforts. In addition to pursuing "green" careers with innovative majors like Environmental Sciences, our students are tapping into Wofford's legendary campus culture to create events and organizations from the ground-up. Our students are working together make a difference.

WOCOGG

A perfect example of Wofford students working together to change the way the campus impacts the environment is The Wofford College Go Green (WOCOGG) Initiative. It formed in Spring 2008 as a coalition of students from a variety of separate organizations on campus who all share a passion to create a more environmentally aware and environmentally sustainable Wofford College.

Earth Day Spartanburg

Earth Day SpartanburgWOCOGG was part of the first Earth Day Spartanburg Campaign in 2008, which was a collaborative effort by area institutions whose student environmental coalitions had formed into the Spartanburg Intercollegiate Green Alliance (or SIGA). The goal of the Earth Day Campaign was to draw closer working relationships between colleges, city/county governments, and non-profits to create a more environmentally just and sustainable Spartanburg.

Real Food Challenge

Wofford's Real Food Challenge campaign is part of a nation-wide, intercollegiate "Real Food" movement that aims to push food service providers on campuses to purchase food that follow certain criteria to insure social justice and integrity.

Real Food criteria include:Real Food Challenge

1) Food that is grown with sustainable methods,

2) Food that is grown in socially just conditions,

3) Food that comes from local/regional growers

4) Where applicable (like chocolate, coffee, rice), food that is purchased within a Fair Trade system which promotes fair prices for farmers, social justice and environmental standards.

Wofford students are currently working with Aramark, the campus food service provider, to help reach a goal of 20% Real Food purchases by 2020. For more info on the Real Food Challenge, click here.

Every Hexagon tells a Story

Katherine Rankin, a Success Initiative student, helped create an environmental art theme for the walls in Zach’s. Her design incorporates a hexagon theme because of its organic quality and its appearance throughout nature. The hexagons also serve as a platform for student artwork and a place to voice environmental awareness in all forms of art.

The hexagons can be reserved by individual students or groups to showcase environmental topics. You may reserve a series or individual hexagons by contacting fosterij@wofford.edu
