Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University. These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need.

Xi Iota City-Wide Chapter was chartered on the 10th of February 1979 by ten young women who were students at Wofford College, Converse College, USC-Spartanburg and Limestone College. These young women recognized the need for a public service sorority for college-level women in the Spartanburg area and worked hard to establish Delta Sigma Theta as a leader in community service.
