 Dear ASLE 2007 attendees,

This letter provides important information regarding the upcoming ASLE conference at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC.

Although you will receive a hard copy of the conference program upon registration, it is be available on-line at the conference web site (www.wofford.edu/asle).

Campus Technology:

We’re calling it ASLE Connect, and it will include daily blogs from conference participants (to which you may add your comments) and podcasts of plenary sessions.  This is a first for an ASLE conference. Please encourage your friends and colleagues who were unable to attend the conference to listen to the speakers and panelists.  Instructions to receive the pod cast will be posted on the conference web page.

You will be able to access the Wofford wireless system from most indoor and outdoor areas of campus. The rooms for all sessions will be equipped with computers and projection systems.  Please see the conference web site under “campus technology” for more information.

Check in for Wofford on-campus housing:

A check-in desk will be set up in the vestibule on the east end of Wightman Hall (located on Evins Street).  On Monday (from 12 pm till 10 pm), on Tuesday (from 10 am till 6 pm), and on Wednesday (from 10 am till 6 pm) there will be a volunteer on duty to give you your room key. People arriving outside these hours should call Will Prosser at 843-933-0085. NOTE: It is not necessary for you to call ahead if you signed up for the shuttle by June 1st as in these cases we know your approximate arrival time.

Parking at Wofford:

All campus parking is free of charge, but please place an ASLE Parking pass in your windshield.  If you are driving to campus and staying in the Wofford Village Apartments or residence halls, use the directions at the end of this letter to get to the campus from N. Church Street.  Across from the Sprint store, turn onto Evins St. and left onto Osage Street, and right into the parking lot labeled “ASLE Parking for Village and Residence Halls.”

See the attached Wofford Campus map for other parking locations if you are camping (see map for “ASLE parking for tent village”) on campus or driving to the conference daily (see map and use the east side of Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium parking lot).

Spartanburg Marriott Hotel:

If you are staying at the Spartanburg Marriott Hotel, it is located several blocks south of Wofford on N. Church St.  Parking at the hotel is free.  The hotel will not have your conference registration materials, so please come to the registration table (see location and times below) to pick up your materials.  The conference rate reservation deadline was May 15th.

GSP Airport and pre-arranged shuttle:

The Greenville Spartanburg Airport is easy to navigate and has only one baggage claim area.  If you have pre-arranged to use the ASLE Airport Shuttle, proceed to baggage claim exit and look for a white van with an ASLE Shuttle sign.  Your name will be on the shuttle driver’s list. Please tell your driver if you are staying at the Marriott or in campus housing (for the latter, you will be dropped off in front of Wightman Hall – proceed to the east entrance to receive your room key).

The airport shuttle service is being provided as an extra service to ASLE attendees to help reduce your travel costs.  It is being staffed by volunteers from a local philanthropic organization, The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men’s fraternal organization.  All monies raised through the shuttle service fee will be donated to support Special Olympics, seminarians, and local charities.  The drivers will do the best they can to get you to and from the airport in a safe, friendly, and timely fashion.  If your flight is delayed or you run into other problems that affect your scheduled departure or arrival times, please call Chris Giardina at 864-809-3095, or email him at chris.giardina@marriott.com (Chris just happens to work at the Marriott, but this shuttle service in not affiliated with the hotel).

If you have not scheduled your shuttle trip in advance, please do not expect the driver to accommodate you upon your arrival (if there happens to be extra room, he will).  If he cannot accommodate you, you will need to arrange for a taxi (e.g., ETS Airport Express 864.877.6666) or a rental car.

Registration Desk:

The Registration Desk will normally be located in the Great Oaks Hall of the Roger Milliken Science Center (see campus map for parking locations).  The hours of operation of the main registration desk will be from 12:00 – 4:00 on Tuesday.  We will temporarily relocate the registration desk to the Lobby of the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium (see campus map) during the opening reception from 4:30 – 6:00 pm on Tuesday.  Registration will return to the Great Oaks Hall on Wednesday morning at 8:00 am.

Items you may wish you had with you if you’re living on campus:

• reading light
• travel clock
• light weight blanket (if you get cold in air conditioning). The linen service only provides sheets, pillow, towel and washcloth.
• small cooler if you’re staying in a dormitory (dorms do have ice machines and soda machines)
• village apartments have a refrigerator/freezer and stove, but are not equipped with pans, plates, or utensils

In the tote bag that you will receive at registration, you will find:

• a list of recommended restaurants for meals (with directions)
• the conference program
• your pre-ordered tee-shirt and/or cap
• tickets for any extra events that you purchased (e.g., banquet, field trips)
• ASLE parking pass (parking is free, but to aide our public safety officers in maximizing campus security, please display your pass on the front dashboard of your vehicle)

There will be a trolley that will be running between campus (in front of the Burwell building) and downtown Spartanburg (on Morgan Square) during lunch hours.  It will also make a stop at the Marriott if requested by a passenger.

Driving to campus:

From Charlotte via I-85 South (71 miles, 1.3 hours)
Continue southbound on I-85 past a series of exits marked Spartanburg, including the Business I-85 spur.  Exit #75 (SC-9) is marked "To Wofford College."  At the top of the ramp, 4.3 miles from the campus, turn left.  After the fourth traffic signal, SC-9 turns left down a ramp to join I-585.  Do not turn there, but follow the sign straight ahead to Wofford via North Church Street (US-221). After you pass the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, be alert to the fact Church Street curves to the left at its intersection with the Asheville Highway.  The front gate to the campus is on the left, 0.4 miles beyond that point.

From Atlanta via I-85 North (170 miles, 3.3 hours)
These directions also apply to campus visitors coming from the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. (20 miles, 0.5 hours)

Leave I-85 at Exit #69, the Spartanburg Business I-85 spur.  Follow the freeway to Exit #4 (Ashville Highway / SC-56), marked "To Wofford College."  At the bottom of the ramp, you are on Hearon Circle.  The second exit off the circle is Asheville Highway and is marked with a Wofford sign.  Continue straight ahead toward downtown Spartanburg for 2.7 miles.  The front gate to the campus is on the left, 0.4 miles after the intersection with North Church Street (US-221).

From Asheville and I-40 via I-26 East (65 miles, 1 hour)
Take Exit #15 (Spartanburg via US-176), marked "To Wofford College."  At the top of the cloverleaf ramp, 8.2 miles from the college, turn right.  After passing the First Baptist Church - North Spartanburg and a shopping center, the highway divides; be sure to bear left and stay on US-176 / I-585.  Follow the freeway past the USC Upstate Campus and the Milliken Research Center and take Exit #25-B, North Church Street (US-221).  After you pass the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, be alert to the fact Church Street curves to the left at its intersection with the Asheville Highway.  The front gate to the campus is on the left, 0.4 miles beyond that point.

From Columbia and I-20 via I-26 West (90 miles, 1.3 hours)
Take Exit #28 (US-221), marked "To Wofford College."  At the bottom of the ramp, 8.9 miles from the college, turn right.  This dual-lane highway, which becomes South Church Street, takes you directly to the Wofford Campus.  After reaching the central business district, continue past the Spartanburg County Library and Morgan Square to the main gate, which is on the right just beyond Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.
