Wofford's Sandor Teszler Library has installed a special photo exhibit for the ASLE 2007 conference. Vivian Stockman's Mountaintop Removal photographs will be on display in the gallery, located on the library's lower level (please wear your ASLE name badge as you explore the library and the rest of campus).
Vivian Stockman is project coordinator for the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition (OVEC), which is based in Huntington, West Virginia. Stockman holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Communications from The Ohio State University. Stockman’s photos of mountaintop removal and the movement to stop this extreme coal-mining practice have been published in newspapers, magazines, books, and on websites. Publications credits include the New York Times, the Washington Monthly, Orion Magazine, World Watch Magazine, E Magazine, French Geo, several college textbooks, a poetry book, and "Big Coal" by Jeff Goodell. Her photos also have been included in documentaries, including "Black Diamonds," and "Hard Coal."
Her essay about mountaintop removal was published in 2004 in The Appalachians, a companion book to a PBS TV series by the same name. Stockman writes occasional op-eds on energy-related issues.
She has filmed several documentaries including "Mountaintop Removal" and "Sludge." Vivian leads OVEC’s Sludge Safety Project and organizes the Friends of the Mountains meetings.
Besides photography, Stockman’s work for OVEC includes developing content for the group’s two websites, http://www.ohvec.org/ and http://www.sludgesafety.org/, media relations, and outreach efforts, and the occasional foray in street theatre as "King Coal."
