Saturday Field Trips

Saturday's trips have both educational and recreational appeal. Space is limited on these trips, and pre-paid registration is necessary. Your choices are described below. Please be aware that we will not be able to refund your payment if cancellation is made after May 10, 2007.  All trips are scheduled to return by 6:00 p.m.

Carl Sandburg Connemara: A visit to Carl Sandburg's Home
Join poet and writer Thomas Rain Crowe (Zoro's Field: My Life in the Appalachian Woods) and classical guitarist/Wofford professor Jhon Akers (The Story of Carl Sandburg and Andres Segovia on CD) for a special visit to Connemara, Carl Sandburg's North Carolina mountain home for 22 years (more details). The price of the trip includes lunch at the Purple Onion in the mountain village of Saluda, a tour of the Sandburg house, barns, and grounds, as well as a 30-minute program by each of your hosts on different aspects of Sandburg's life and work. ($45 per person)

The Biltmore Trip has been cancelled.  A refund is available for those who have purchased it.
US National Whitewater Center

US National Whitewater Center
We are currently organizing a half-day trip to Charlotte, NC to enjoy the US National Whitewater Center.  Travel by bus an hour northeast of Spartanburg to the US National Whitewater Center, what is quickly becoming the Southeast's number one postmodern "outdoor" adventure destination. At the 300-acre wooded facility alongside the Catawba River you can choose either a two-hour raft trip (class II-IV) on the world's largest man-made recirculating river, or climb on one of the world's largest climbing towers offering 120 routes. Lunch will be available for purchase ($10-$13) at the on-site restaurant.

Read about the Whitewater Center from the trip's host, John Lane, here

Base price is $20 for the trip (you may hike the trails at no additional cost). Please select from among the following choices and add to your payment.

raft trip $33/person
climbing $23 per hour/person (includes harness, belay, and some instruction)
canoe rental on Catawba River $10 per hour
