About Wofford Scholars
The Wofford Scholars program is the basis of merit-based scholarships at Wofford College. High school counselors are invited to nominate four juniors (in the spring of the students' junior year) for every 100 students in the junior class. Nomination materials are mailed to high schools in February and must be completed and returned by the end of March. To qualify as a Wofford Scholar nominee, a student should be ranked in the top 10 percent of the class and have achieved a combined score of 1200 (Critical Reading and Math) on the PSAT or SAT or a 26 on the ACT or PLAN.
Program Information
Since 1949, outstanding high school students have been competing at Wofford for scholarships based on leadership, academic achievement and character. Each year the college receives nominations for the Wofford Scholars Program from guidance counselors across the United States. From these nominees, students are selected and invited to compete for a variety of scholarships. Wofford's faculty/staff, students and alumni eagerly anticipate meeting the best and brightest young people in the country on Scholars Day.
To be competitive, nominees should:
- 1. Rank in the top 10 percent of their class
- 2. Score at least 1200 on the SAT/ PSAT or 26 on the ACT/PLAN
- 3. Be active in leadership and service roles in their school and/or community
Becoming a Wofford Scholar
Once they become high school seniors, potential scholarship candidates are required to apply for admission to Wofford and to visit the campus in November (for Early Action candidates) or in February (for Regular Decision candidates) to participate in interviews. This allows members of the selection committee to meet students, answer their questions, and introduce them to the Wofford community. Wofford Scholar nominees are invited to the appropriate Scholars Day depending on the application deadline for which they apply. Application deadlines are November 15 for Early Decision and December 5 for Regular Decision.
To be eligible, nominees must submit the following items:
- 1. The Wofford College application for admission
- 2. The High School Report Form with an official transcript
- 3. A letter of recommendation
If you are a high school junior, you will find that the Wofford Scholars Program can be an excellent way to learn more about the Wofford community and gain assistance in financing your education at an outstanding academic institution. If you are a high school counselor, you have the opportunity to help seniors in your school compete for scholarships worth between $8,000 and $110,000 over a four-year period.
