Accounting Majors

I chose the Accounting major because it came naturally to me, I enjoyed it, I knew there would be good employment opportunities, and I had a wonderful professor who encouraged me to pursue the major.  I had an accounting internship during my senior Interim.  I learned a lot and was able to see how what I am studying will be applied when I get a job.  It also helped me make important decisions regarding my career.  After graduation, I am going to NC State University, and I plan to become a CPA.

During the spring of my junior year, while looking for an internship for the summer of 2007, I realized that the opportunities available to an Accounting major are vast.  I began attending recruiting events for the big four accounting firms, and I soon learned that the stereotypical accountant is not at all like the true accountant in today's world.  After graduation, I will begin the Masters of Accountancy program at North Carolina State University.

Without a doubt, Accounting has been a great choice for me.  In the spring of my junior year, I took an auditing course.  To be honest, the first half was pretty boring because we learned a lot of terminology, but when we started looking at cases, I really started enjoying what we were doing.  As a result, I ended up doing an internship with PriceWaterhouseCoopers during Interim my senior year, and it confirmed my desire to go into public accounting as an auditor.  Next year, I plan to obtain a Masters in Accounting at NC State University.

My only regret is not having declared my Accounting major the day I arrived on campus as a freshman.  The professors have been wonderful resources and mentors, and my fellow classmates have been supportive and encouraging.  The camaraderie that develops among Accounting majors is very special.

After graduation, I will become a part of the assurance and advisory staff at ElliottDavis, a regional accounting firm.  I feel very prepared to enter the workforce, and I am sure that my Wofford education will guide me in making a positive contribution to my organization.  I look forward to the challenges and the opportunities for problem-solving I will face in my work .

I have always been interested in working in the business world, and I became an Accounting major to learn more about how businesses work.  The major has given me the tools and understanding I need to become successful.  Through my Accounting and Finance courses, I have gained knowledge in many diverse areas; this allows me a wide range of career options upon graduation.

I will be attending The College of Charleston's Master of Accountancy program in the fall.  After completing this program in 2009, I plan to sit for the CPA exam and to practice public Accounting.
