China’s Cultural Revolution (1966 – 1976) was an attempt by Chairman Mao Zedong to consolidate his power by returning the country to the socialist roots of the Communist revolution.  This group of original posters from the period illustrates several aspects of the Cultural Revolution including the forced relocation of urban workers and intellectuals to the countryside, the personality cult of Chairman Mao, the influence of his sayings in daily life, and the perceived threats from outside China--particularly from the Soviet Union.
